FAQ’s

Q. My life is so busy. How will I ever remember to bring these bags to the grocery store?
A.
Over time is just becomes another good habit, like brushing your teeth. I always do a quick mental checklist before I go out the door counting the 4 things I need…keys, purse, shopping list and – my cloth shopping bags. I keep a couple of extra bags in my glove box in case I forget them.

Q. Can I store my food in the bags?
A.
Sure, just make sure the vegetable drawer in your fridge is kept dry. You can also store dry goods like onions in your bags. It prevents them from rolling around and keeps them in the dark. I often use the colored strings as a color code so I know what’s inside the bag without having to look. A bag with a red string might contain cherries, apples or red peppers; the green string bag might have brussels sprouts, courgettes or brocolli inside; purple string-aubergines, plums or purple cabbage. It’s also fun to personalise your bags (see: Crafting Ideas).

Q. What about produce in my fridge like lettuce, that might wilt if not kept in plastic?
A.
We’re realists. We know that we haven’t managed to rid the world of plastic bags yet, so chances are you’ve got one or two around the house. If you don’t eat your produce right away, you can slip your SAX bag inside a plastic bag to keep produce crisper. I save used bread bags for this purpose and re-use them many times.

Q. Won’t it cost me more to have my produce weighed in these cloth bags?
A.
Yes, but the cost is minimal. For example, weighing a 3 lb. bag of potatoes in a SAX bag might add around 3¢ to your total purchace price. In the long run, you are looking at maybe a couple of dollars annually, the cost of a cup of coffee. A small price to pay for keeping potentially hundreds of plastic bags out of the landfill each year. Some shops, like Whole Foods Market, offer a 5¢ rebate to customers who bring their own cloth bags.

Q. How do I care for my SAX bags?
A.
Wash in warm water, inside-out, fully open to help prevent the drawstrings from snagging.

Q. Can I buy extra bags of a certain size through the website?
A.
At this point we are only selling SAXbags wholesale to shops. Eventually we will be setting up an online store where you can purchase extra sets of 4 bags, separate sizes, and organic cotton bread bags.
